Native fish in the Murray-Darling Basin range from legendary giants like Murray cod to fast, furious and colourful purple-spotted gudgeons. Our fish have evolved over millions of years adapting to long periods of drought followed by widespread floods. Our catfish build nests while our Golden perch can swim for thousands of kilometres just to find a partner.

Native fish numbers have declined dramatically across the Murray-Darling Basin, but we are working to bring them back. There have been many threats to native fish including changes to water quality, water management, the introduction of pest fish species, barriers to fish movement, and overfishing. We are addressing these threats, but we need your help.

Whether you are a keen fisher or budding conservationist there are a whole host of events happening during native fish week that will improve the habitat for our native fish. From fishing competitions and research forums, to fish tagging and tree planting simply click on the calendar to see what is happening near you.

The Native Fish Strategy is a partnership program between the Queensland, News South Wales, Victorian, South Australian and the Australian Capital Territory governments and their communities, under the leadership of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority.
